Nos.

Sir,

165

Supreme Court,

Hongkong, September 3rd., 1908.

:

With reference to your letter 0.8.0.

6808/08 of 1st. instant, I have the honour to inform you that

the nature of my complaint in reference to the papers which Mr.

Sharp, K.C., searched, while sitting at Mr. Jones' table, and

which Mr. Jones immediately thereafter took in to the Chiet

Justice, was quite misunderstood: 1 had no objection to the

papers being examined: on the contrary, I was very glad that

that special matter was being locked into refer to the

question of practice which cases Admiralty Action No. 4 of 1908

and Original Jurisdiction No. 197 of 1902 contain - an account

of the present enquiry into the working of the Registry origina-

ting through it. What I most strongly objected to and consider-

ed irregular was, that Mr. Jones should have allowed Mr. Sharp

and an outsider, whose name i have not even now been able to

find out, to examine books and papers for which I am responsible

without first asking my permission as the Head of the Depart-

ment.

%.

under ordinary circumstances a search fee

has to be paid for looking up papers in the Registry.

1 have etc.,

(Sd.) J. W. Norton yshe,

Registrar.

The honourable

The Colonial Secretary.
